Creative Development: a reflection On My Process So Far

I have chosen to make certain decisions for my choreography carefully and have put a lot of thought into what they will portray. For example, with the music I looked into having clock themed music for my piece however most of the pieces I found felt too dramatic for the atmosphere I wanted to create. I then came to the decision of choosing a light hearted and jazz genre piece of music called Instrumental 1 by Viewfinder(Viewfinder,2020), since at the end of the piece I want the audience to see my character accepting the inevitability of growing old and that it shouldn’t be viewed as a negative thing. The rhythm and beats are very inconsistent in my music, however there are no dramatic changes to the music and I really enjoy this because it conveys that growing old is something that occurs gradually and it isn’t a sudden change.(P//) I have also decided to include a variety of choreographic devices into my performance to get the message of, acceptance in growing old, across to the audience. One choreographic device I have used is a motif, where I used an action or a series of movements in different sections to show that it was still the same person but they are increasing in their age. I found this very useful as it links to repetition and finding movements to repeat can really catch the audience’s attention. An example of this in my piece is taking a picture on a Polaroid camera and collecting the picture from the top of the camera after the photo being taken. This links back to our stimulus as it was a Polaroid picture of a woman with tears in it revealing an older version of the woman.(P//) Here below is a video of a section of my choreography: https://youtu.be/Pnh7d_EwB0A After making these decisions I have still found the process of making my own choreography fairly challenging as sometimes I have struggled to go back to the practitioner I am using (Wayne McGregor), compared to improvising and making my own movement without intentions that link to my stimulus. Some feedback I received that relates to this was, that it wasn’t obvious from an audience point of view that I was old and restricted in my ability, therefore to improve on this I have gone through my movement and changed the posture or the look of an arm or leg to create a sense of desperation rather than elegance. After receiving this feedback I also added in moments of filling in my own negative space in sections that I felt could have more of an intention to it to incorporate the influence of Wayne McGregor.
